Open Conversations - Reducing the Stigma Against Mental Health

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Its an opportunity for me to talk about something that drives my work. I am a Psychologist and see the impact of stigma associated with mental illness every day. It stops people from reaching out and seeking help because of preconceived notions about what mental health issues are all about, or who are the types of people who experience them.

For me, reducing the stigma against mental health is all about having open conversations. I have had a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with Spoonie-Mama on her blog. We have created a two part post dealing with the impact of mental illness on families and loved ones. It's an honest look at lived experience from Spoonie-Mama with some professional experience on my part, on the reality of loving someone who experiences mental health issues, the positives and the challenges (Part 1). Part 2 (to be released next week) is about tips and coping strategies for loved ones, as well as the individual experiencing mental health issues.

I feel so fortunate to have worked with her on this blog. That she trusted me with her personal experiences and that we could write something honest, and hopefully helpful to further open up conversations about mental health. Click the link below to go and have a read! You know you want to.
